Cold crucible

Printable Version

The cold crucible combines metal melting and levitation, which requires little or no contact between the crucible and the melting bath. This prevents any contamination from the dust released as the crucible disintegrates.

Cold crucible melting is coupled with highly-developed casting processes like centrifugation casting and is done in a vacuum chamber. It is used for working with noble alloys and producing parts with complex shapes.

Benefits of this technique:

  • Maximum purity
  • Fast and easy to execute
  • Superior mixture, agitates base materials

Fives has partnered with cutting-edge industry players to industrialize cold crucible technology (once only used by laboratories) and meet a growing need in sectors like aerospace, where new techniques to develop titanium parts are in very high demand, or the automotive industry to manufacture parts for the next generations of high-efficiency engines.
