Fives has gained extensive experience in power sources for specific loads. Some of these include nonlinear load supplies like arcs and cold or hot arc plasma.
Plasmas are a fully or partially ionized medium, a mixture of neutral particles, positive ions (atoms or molecules that have lost one or more electrons) and negative electrons. These loads are unique in that their impedance is not constant depending on the power injected, the grid parameter can even be negative and they sometimes require several kV of voltage supply.
Adjusting a power supply at these loads demands advanced knowledge of the load's physical and electrical behavior.
Drawing on its expertise in rapid power switching and digital electronics, Fives has developed generators for applications like ozone production (cold plasma), vapor phase coatings, discharge and gliding arc tubes or direct current arc tubes (hot plasma), and plasma torches.
